What is a Ship?

A ship is simply the name of our local unit. We are based in Hendersonville but pull in young men and women from throughout the Nashville Metro area and beyond. Fun fact, our ship number matches the local Coast Guard Auxiliary flotilla.

Can I sail with the Ship?

The short answer is yes you can!  While we are sponsored by the Coast Guard and focus on power boats, we partner with a local sailing ship and have plans to coordinate activities so you can experience a range of boats.

Who can join?

Sea Scouts is open to anyone interested between the ages of 14 and 20.  We have the adult leaders and guidance to handle both male and female crews. We welcome anyone who is interested.

Can I afford it?

Yes you can. On a yearly basis, costs average out to less than many other activities like sports teams, dance teams, and other hobbies.  We work to keep costs as low as possible.  While we do have costs there are options for Sea Scouts to afford it.  The local community has been generous in offering support.  We also have some fund raising activities that help offset the cost of our annual long cruise.

Do you just hang out in Nashville?

Simply put no.  While many of the activities are in the Nashville area the ship annually does a Long Cruise that lasts at least a week on the boat.  We have visited Coast Guard bases, gone to Florida to finish Scuba Certifications, plus many other activities outside of the Nashville Area.

When does the Ship Meet?

During the warmer months we normally meet 1st Saturday of the month for an overnight on the boat and the 3rd Friday of the month for a day on the boat.  During the colder months time varies with activities.  Plus we have opportunities to participate with the Coast Guard, Scouting, and other events.

Are Sea Scouts part of Boy Scouts of America?

     Yes, Sea Scouts are part of Boy Scouts of America.  The organization was started in England during the year 1910 by  Warington Baden-Powell, the founder of Boy Scouts (Robert Baden-Powell) brother.  The Sea Scout Wikipedia entry does a great job further exploring the organization.  

Which Council are you part of?

We are part of the Middle Tennessee Council.

What do Sea Scouts do?

In short, a whole lot of things.  
The Sea Scouts current goals:
  1. Learn boat safety and a lot of boat related skills like boat handling, navigation, etc.
  2. Learn to Scuba dive. This includes a basic snorkeling class.
  3. Become Marksmen through rifle training
  4. Have fun with on the water activities that range from water skiing to paddleboarding
As a Sea Scout, you can also participate in planning and have a say in how you will learn, grow, and have fun.

What is America's Tall Ship?

The Coast Guards very own sail powered tall ship the USCG Eagle.  Each year, Sea Scouts get the chance to spend one week aboard practicing their skills and performing all tasks.  It's an adventure and a learning experience at sea.  As a Sea Scout, you can apply to spend a week aboard this magnificent vessel.  ​America's Tall Ship​​​
